Criminal Justice Resource Center

Originally built in 1914, the Criminal Justice Resource Center building in the downtown historic district of Durham was last used as the Durham Jail Annex. MHAworks renovated the 40,600- square-foot concrete and steel structure and it is Durham County’s first LEED-CI certified project.

The scope of work included demolition throughout; implementation of a bright modern office aesthetic with daylighting and low VOC emitting materials; and upgrades to restrooms, elevators, and building technology. Building envelope improvements included the replacement of all exterior glazing with insulated glazing panels, historic steel sash frame rehabilitation, increased perimeter insulation, and exterior concrete repair and waterproofing.

Because the building was fully occupied during construction, MHAworks separated the design of this project into phases to minimize downtime and maximize occupant productivity and comfort.
