Williamston Flatiron Building Restoration

MHAworks worked closely with the Martin County Arts Council to revitalize the derelict 1917 Williamston Flatiron Building. When it was donated to the arts council, the building was on the verge of collapsing. With the help of a Golden LEAF Foundation Grant, the 10,000-square-foot facility has again become a cultural cornerstone of Williamston.

The space features a catering kitchen, gallery space, a community meeting room, a dance hall, and support spaces such as offices. The entire structure, roof, stairs, elevator, and HVAC and electrical systems were completely reworked all at a cost of $50/square foot. When speaking at the ribbon cutting, Dan Gerlach, president of the Golden LEAF Foundation, said he had never seen money go that far. It was the entire team’s commitment to maximizing value which yielded a truly unique and successful project.
