UNC Hospitals’ Adolescent/Young Adult (AYA) Infusion Center is Open

Last week, MHAworks attended the dedication celebration for UNC Lineberger Cancer Center’s new Adolescent/Young Adult (AYA) Oncology and Infusion center. Completed earlier this summer, the AYA infusion center will offer patients the opportunity to receive their cancer care alongside their peers in a comfortable, new facility.  

Biophilic design elements such as forest-printed window shades, nature colors, organic shapes, and images of nature were included in the design of the infusion center to help create a relaxing ambiance for patients, visitors, and providers to come to. Since infusion treatments can last several hours at a time, it was important that the center include comfortable seating, outlets to charge cell phones and other devices, and privacy screens to ensure the patient’s time spent in the center is as comfortable as possible.  

“Patients and their families can spend hours at a time sitting in the infusion center while receiving treatments,” said Brian Maxwell, MHAworks firm president and health care studio director. “Our goal was to create a comfortable health care environment using evidence-based design that promotes healing and wellbeing for all users.”
