Last week, MHAworks joined the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) to celebrate the groundbreaking for the full renovation of the Gravely Wing of NCDHHS’ Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center (BMNTC).

One of three state-operated neuro-medical treatment centers in North Carolina, Black Mountain Neuro-Medical Treatment Center is equipped to provide services for individuals with brain injuries, progressive dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. NCDHHS’ goal for renovating the Gravely Wing is to increase resident capacity, increase resident comfort, and care efficiency through thoughtful selections of interior finishes, materials, colors, and building layout.

Originally built in 1932, the Gravely Wing of BMNTC included two residential units and office spaces. The complete building renovation includes three new residential units, nurses’ stations, shower rooms, day and dining rooms, medication rooms, nourishment rooms, and staff lounge. The mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems will be replaced with new updated systems.

“We design every health care project with a focus on the human experience,” said Brian Maxwell, MHAworks president and health care studio director. “Every material from the colors on the walls to the light fixtures in the ceiling are thoughtfully selected using evidence-based design to promote the healing, comfort, and safety of all users. We are excited to begin bringing NCDHHS’ BMNCT vision for the Gravely wing to life so that NCDHHS can continue to provide optimal care in Western North Carolina.”
