Construction Kicks Off at the TROSA Triad Campus in Winston-Salem

The opioid epidemic continues to create tremendous demand for affordable, effective long-term substance abuse treatment programs in North Carolina. Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers, Inc. (TROSA) offers a treatment model that has proven highly successful throughout the Triangle. Due to the program’s success, the North Carolina General Assembly has supported the creation of a second, 200-bed campus in Winston-Salem.

The expansion of this award-winning treatment model was celebrated through a ground-breaking ceremony at the Triad campus on Friday, April 30.

MHAworks is the architect of record for both the Durham and Winston-Salem campuses and is leading the multi-phased renovation and construction of the second campus. Construction officially began in May of 2021, just months after completing two residential buildings on TROSA’s East Campus in Durham.

TROSA plans to start serving individuals in the Triad starting in the spring of 2022. The first construction and renovation phase is projected to be completed by the end of 2022 and will bring capacity of the second campus to more than 100 beds. In late 2022, TROSA hopes to begin the second phase of this effort that will expand capacity to 200 beds.

“This is the first time TROSA is expanding beyond its Durham campus,” says Janice Kalin, Chief Development Officer for TROSA. “We look forward to helping more North Carolinians in need of cost-free and long-term treatment.”

TROSA has also secured a lease for a 40,000 square-foot commercial property in Winston-Salem for a thrift store that will open in 2022. The thrift store will provide marketable vocational training for residents and will serve as a social enterprise to help fund the program.
