Family House at UNC Hospitals
MHA
works delivered planning, programming, designing and following construction quality for
the new, $8 million SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals to provide a nurturing home-away-from-home for
transplant, oncology, and critical care patients and their families. The 43,000 sf, 44-bedroom
hospitality house includes single bedrooms and suites, library and computer spaces, a variety of
comfortable living and dining areas, family cooking and laundry rooms.
The exterior is clad in cementitious shingles and trim for ease of maintenance and to permit the
intricate, craftsman-style detailing. Patterned 50-year shingles cover the roof and windows are cased
in a weather-resistant polymer. Interior finishes include warm, stained craftsman woodwork, original
paintings designed into the architectural friezes, special stained concrete floors, and a focal stone
fireplace.
